Not sure what to make of the merger between Moblin and Maemo. I can see positives and negatives. Obviously today was all about marketing and there wasn’t really any questions answered. I’m wondering what’s happening with the Moblin 2.2 release, seeing as it was due for April 2010 and the Meego 1.0 release won’t happen until the second half of 2010. It’s possible that Moblin 2.2 will be held back to become Meego 1.0 Netbook. It’s also possible that Meego 1.0 could be Moblin 2.4 Netbook. I’ve no idea about a MID oriented release. We’ve been hearing about Moblin 2.0 for MID’s since last year but nothing was ever released that  I could see. I was expecting there to be something for the 2.2 release. And as for Maemo, I’ve no idea there. I’m guessing that there’ll still be a Maemo 6 release still but it’ll be market branded as some form of Meego. Maemo 6+ will likely be where the integration starts properly.

I’d be disappointed if Clutter/MX where truly played down in favor for a QT based application stack. And this for me goes to the core of why I’m not sure how to feel about this. Consistency. Or rather the lack there of from the parent projects.

1. 1)Moblin 1.0, based on the Ubuntu implementation of the GNOME Moblie stack.
   

2. 2)Scrap that, Moblin 2.0, start again with an custom rpm based distro and an innovative user experience
   

3. 3)Pimp the Moblin SDK and package it for developers to use on Windows and Linux. Create competitions to foster an application eco system tailored to Atom and the Moblin distro
   

4. 4)Moblin 2.2, scrap that Meego 1.0, de-emphasize all the advances and progress made in points 2 and 3 and start pimping another toolkit stack all over again.
   

Not too up to speed with Maemo, but on the surface, it’s a similar story of late. Maemo 5 was looking like a good release with clutter integration and then it seemed Nokia neutered it by moving their investment in Hildon and all the apps they and their community had been working on to the side and mandating that the future was QT. Now they’ve basically made their platform irrelevant again by merging with a fundamentally foundation in Moblin.

Also, is it just me, or is MeeGo a bit of a crap name ?
